Isle of Wight Day 3

We got to Osborne House today.  This was the home of Queen Victoria.  It was wonderful.  No phtos are allowed in the house, but I took a lot of  photos in the grounds.

Terrace garden

Interesting tile floor between the levels of the terrace gardens.

The pony cart.  We rode it from the house back to the entrance.

Lynn on the pony cart.

The Swiss Cottage play and education cottage for Victoria's 9 children.

Each of the children had his/her own wheelbarrow marked with his name--they did the gardening at the cottage.  Prince Albert thought it built character.

Swiss Cottage Museum
Contains many items collected by the children, and a wonderful collection of Native American artifacts which were give to Prince Albert on his visit to Canada in 1860.  The dolls, the beadwork were wonderful.  Unfortunately, I could not take pics and no book or postcards are available.  I will check to see if I can find any photos on line.

Children's garden.

Victoria's Bathing Machine--complete with flush toilet and changing room.

Deck house of the Alberta--the ship Victoria and Alber traveled aback and forth to the mainland--and the ship that carried Victoria's body back to the mainland for burial.

Dill plant in the walled garden at Osbourne House.  I wasn't expecting the red berry like fruits..

Walled garden.

East Cowes--ferry to Cowes

The Needles.  We could not get to the old and new batteries because it was a mile walk, and I has used up my hips and knees.  We were disappointed, because it is a huge tourist trap--you have to pay four poinds to park, and we weren't even able to go there.

We did enoy the Marconi Mounment--he sent some of his messages from the Needles.

We tried to get to Yarmouth Castle, the last built in Henry the 8th's coast defences, but arrived as they were about to close.  We wereable to see some of it.

Yarmouth Castle from Yarmouth Pier

Taking a wee in the seas--charming mum and boy on Yarmouth Pier.

We stopped in Freshwater to pick up the ingredients for a Ploughman's Supper to have back at the boat.
Bread, ham, Isle of Wight cheese and living basil for the salad.  Brilliant!  (I'm getting very Brit!  :-)
