Isle of Wight First Day

We ate at this restaurant our fist night in Bembridge.  Very nice Lynn had a Mediterraean platter with lamb, hummus, tzatiki, and salad and I had cottge pie.

We walked along the beach at Sandown to the town.

Lynn as we wntered the high street of Sandown.

Beach huts on Hope Beach

Tower on the beach at Sandown.

Shanklin Chine.  "Chine" is a local term meaning ravine.  This one has been used by smugglers, the Excise Men, etc.

Hot salt bath.

Amazing plants in the chine--almost tropical.

Lower fall.

Upper fall.

Mosses on the rocks.

Lynn at the bottom of the falls.

P.L.U.T.O. = Pipeline under the ocean.  This was a 65 mile pipe-line to supply the allied army during the war.  It went through the chine and across the channel.

Stocks.

At the Shanklin Chine Lodge

An embroidered tablecloth detailing the history of WWII

Cliffs beyond Sandown.

Driving through the fields.

Appledurcom House
This house dates from the 1700's.  It was ruined in WWII by a German plane.  The pilot  had turned around and headed back inland when he was attacked, then turned again and dropped mines without intending to, then crashed in front of a farmhouse.  Most of the roof dropped in to the house and destroyed the beams so it could not be restored.

Lynn in front of the house

The only one of 7 staircases still standing---but not used.

Horse mounting black--it was blown to the woods 5 miles from the house and restored to its original spot after being found.

The restored great hall is used for weddings

The pilot flew over this village before attacking the house.

Covered carriage portico.

After the house, we toured the Brading Roman Villa.  It was wonderful, but I didn't take pictures because it was covered and dark and I did not want to use flash.

Fortifications built during WWII.  Portsmouth is in the distance off to the left.  The two boats are Customs boats--a man had his binoculars trained on them and could read the print.

Remains of an abbey left as a ships' tower.

Men were digging all over the beach.

This man was digging for worms.

Last night we ate at a pub in Bembridge--Lynn had shrimp and chips, I had fish and chips.
